Stone Mastic Asphalt

Stone mastic asphalt, or SMA as it is commonly called, contain a high proportion of single sized coarse aggregate combined with mineral filler, fine aggregate a bitumen. SMA is primarily a surface course product but is also available as a binder course material. Aggregates with a high PSV are normally specified for the surface course mixture’s that give the finished pavement good micro & macrotexture that will produce excellent skid resistance & rut resistance properties. At Lagan, we produce our own polymer modified bitumen that is incorporated into all of our SMA mixtures as specified.

Stone mastic Asphalt (SMA)
Benefits & Key Features

  • SMA, as well as being a highly durable material, produces exceptional resistance to wheel track rutting due to high percentage of coarse aggregate & modified binders used in its design.
  • SMA gives a smooth appearance as the texture produced by SMA materials is a negative texture so the pavement is essentially flush with voids between the aggregates just below the surface of the material to create the macrotexture required.
  • SMA will also emit very low sound levels so is beneficial in sound reduction when compared with other surface course materials.
  • The material can be used as a surface course material virtually anywhere, from motorways & all other road types, high stress roundabouts with high traffic volumes, to commercial & residential areas. It is also very popular in household driveways due to its high resistance to scuffing from tight vehicle turnings.
